I am a self-publisher. I self-copy-edited and self-proofread the first book of my Intergalactic Wizard Scout Chronicles. Surprisingly, a lot of readers liked the story concept and the story itself. Not so surprisingly, I had reviewers hit me pretty hard on dialogue, wrong word use (example: they’re / their), data dumps, and a myriad of other things. It became painfully obvious that while I could write a story that connected with many readers, I needed help. But hey, I’m a little on the stubborn side, so I convinced myself that I could work harder and clean up future books on my own. Consequently, I self-copy-edited and self-proofread the next three books of the series. My self-editing did improve, but reviews and emails from my growing base of fans let me know in no uncertain terms that I needed professional help.
While I’m stubborn, I’m not stupid, so I began searching for a professional editor. I struck gold when I found Debra Hartmann (no relation by the way). From her first email responding to my initial request, I was impressed by her professionalism, helpfulness, and insight. I found her very responsive and helpful giving me useful advice that I could immediately use to improve my writing before I was even a client. From the start, Debra has worked to help me become a better author, which is something I appreciate more than I can say. She always takes the time to explain any suggestions for changing things in my books. She has definitely become my mentor, and my writing is improving with each successive book she edits. I had Debra copy-edit and proofread books five and six of my Intergalactic Wizard Scout Chronicles series from start to finish. She makes me look so professional even I’m impressed with my writing. I’ve even had her do light edits of the first four books of my series which has helped improve their reviews tremendously.
I would highly recommend Debra to any author looking for an editor. You won’t regret it. Her prices are very competitive, and she goes out of her way to keep my costs down. I so very much wish I had worked with Debra on my first four books before they were published. Don’t get me wrong, they’ve done well, and I feel very blessed, but I know they could have been so much better if Debra had helped me with them. I will definitely be using Debra for all future books I write. I look forward to a long and profitable relationship.
I just finished having the ninth book of my Intergalactic Wizard Scout Chronicles series edited by Debra at The Pro Book Editor. I couldn’t be happier, and I will be sending her book one of a new series to edit for me in couple of weeks, so that should let you know how satisfied I am with the work done by Debra and the whole Pro Book Editor staff. Debra has been a mentor to me over the last few years as I’ve written my main series, and my books have received a lot of comments where the reviewers say the writer (that’s me) has improved his writing skills with each book. My fans may not know that Debra’s copyediting and proofreading skills is the reason my writing has gotten better, but I do. She has not only edited my books, but has taken the time to mentor me by going far beyond what one would expect of an editor.
I look forward to many more years of working with Debra and The Pro Book Editor in the years to come.
